A little about us…

roadside

The national media has been kicking it around for a while now. The R-word. Well we’re not mincing words – it’s a recession. Oil is at an all time high, the real estate market is softening, and scariest of all, the cost of making a bagel has tripled. Seems like a good time to buckle down and work hard, shop at the dollar store, and ride out this bumpy stretch in the US economic superhighway. Or… you could quit your job, buy a car, and start bleeding your savings dry on a cross country road trip. Sounds like a plan.

Leaving cushy jobs and a beautiful apartment in the rearview, we pulled up stakes in New York City and set out on the Recession Road Trip. We’ll be documenting our travels on this site. Roads traveled, food sampled, and some of the people who cross our path. On the itinerary: conversations on how this particular economic moment is affecting people in all corners of the country, a look at environmental issues both local and national, and some sampling of American traditions and culture that us Northeasterners miss out on. Fair warning, there’ll probably be a bunch about us – we’ll be spending a lot of time in the car.

So until we run out of steam or gas hits 7 bucks a gallon, you can check back here to see where we’ve been and whom we’ve been talking to on the Recession Road Trip. Suggestions, complaints, and comments are not only welcome but sorely needed.

Look forward to hearing from you,

– Christopher & Gwen
